About Us

Orignally posted March 28th, 2009

We are a pair of sociologists who have been doing research and publishing together and separately for about forty years. Our major long-term project has focused on the most signicant transformation of American society since the Industrial Revolution, which we call the "new economy." We have attempted to describe the impact of the new economy on average Americans in our latest book entitled, America at Risk: The Crisis of Hope, Trust, and Caring,
Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, 2009.

We approach our work as an expression of what is called critical sociology, which has two distinctive features. First, we focus on the dominant economic, political, and cultural institutions in American society as the source of the main social problems afflicting Americans, and second, we believe that knowledge of the social world empowers people by enhancing consciousness and stimulating action to change society in ways that further human fulfillment.

  1. Our readers should also know that we are political agnostics.
